AS THE SAYING GOES, THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE COME IN small packages. And there is no one more qualified than Atul Vir, owner of Houston-based Equator Corporation, to validate that statement. As the developer of several downsized household appliances, Vir saw a niche that was being met in Europe and decided to share it with America in early 1990. As industry trends were happening under Vir’s watchful eye, and as homes got smaller, more people lived alone and there was an obvious concern for our environment, Vir decided it was time he took his washer/dryer idea for a spin.

It’s designed to provide superior cleaning, in a shorter cycle, and use less water resulting in significant energy and water consumption savings. It’s the shortest full-size dishwasher in America – only 32” high; it complies with disabilities requirements; and it works well with custom homes.”And because it’s stainless steel,” adds Vir, ”it will never rust. Also, you can heat water to a higher temperature, allowing the detergent to break down easier, resulting in cleaner dishes.” |
He designed the award-winning EZ 3600 CEE, a ventless, front-loading combo washer/dryer perfect for space-limiting environments. With clever marketing strategies and a product unlike any other, Vir quickly washed up competition in the compact appliance segment of the market. With the EZ 3600 CEE, there’s no transferring of clothes from washer to dryer, and its compact size makes it prime usage for apartments, condominiums and town-homes. ”There’s much less maintenance and lint to worry about, and loads can be about 18 percent larger than other European washers in the market,” explains Vir. ”In addition, we met the Energy Star Standards at the top tier Because of this, Energy Star gave us approval for displaying their logo on our machine.”

For those whose appetites are whet for the mini version, Vir provides that, as well. He recently introduced the Equator Mini- Maid, a compact dishwasher designed to be placed on a kitchen counter. Not only does it save space, time and energy, but it also uses less detergent and water than full-sized ones. Even though it’s scaled down, the Mini-Maid offers full-sized cleaning power with an upper and lower spray arm. While seniors, the disabled and yuppies alike have found the Mini-Maid ideal for their purposes, there has been a great response from offices that want to wash coffee mugs. |

Recently unveiled was Equator's full-size, stainless steel dishwasher, featuring silent operation, durable stainless steel interiors and filter, six wash programs and large capacity (able to wash up to 12 complete place settings). |
| Vir is gratified at the amazing response his products have received and plans to come out with an IPO in the near future. In the next six to 12 months, Equator will be introducing products that Vir says will revolutionize the way appliances are viewed and used. ”We’re an innovative company who makes products that not only look beautiful, but also work well,” he says. ”Our objective has been to mix art with engineering.” And that they do. When you’ve got women calling to thank you for ”saving their lives” when it comes to laundry, it’s safe to say that even small innovations can be hugely impressive.
